Single user operating system
The single user operating system allows one user to work at a time. The resources of the system namely the CPU time and printing facilities are idle till the user logs off. These operating systems are used mainly for computers having only one terminal (stand-alone PCs). Examples are MS_DOS,PC_DOS.

A Multi-user Operating system lets more than one user access the system at one time. Access the computer system is normally provided via network, so that users access the computer remotely using a terminal or other computer. The popular operating systems used for multi-user system are UNIX,LINUX,NETWARE,Ms-Windows,OS/400 etc.
